As 2017 gets well and truly underway it’s a good time to check in and see how your new year goals are going. Working through any negative beliefs or self-talk now will make sure you stay on the path to being the best version of yourself. After all you started the year with goals and expectations and we would like to be there, celebrating with you when you achieve them!
There are some easy points to check in on. So, let’s get real and see when you are at and see what you can do to make 2017 a disruptive year for you.
Check In On Your New Year Goals
Make sure it’s something you want, not what others believe you should want. All too often we end up making lists of goals we think we should be striving for, maybe because someone else said to, someone you love and want to please, or it’s supposed to be valuable, everyone says so. The truth is, if it’s not valuable to you, it’s not going to happen. All you are doing is making your to-do pile unhealthy and unmotivating.
Top Goal Tip: Clean up the list so you feel inspired to get going. You might have a few have undesirable to-do’s to get to a bigger goal, but as long as the overall goal is a happy one then you’ll smash it without having to think about it. Thinking is the hardest thing to do!
Coach Tip: Work with your coach or mentor to consider your wins from last year – even the little ones. Your coach will assist in develop strategies to get to more of those moments in 2017 and hold you to a higher standard to achieve your vision for your life.
Check Your Motivation
Do you ever get the strong urge to do something, you are completely motivated and then, as you get going and things are improving you lose interest and motivation falls away. It’s just not important anymore?
That’s because we are motivated in two ways. Towards Motivation and Away From Motivation.
These are concepts we discuss at Live it Now because when we move towards a desired goal, the closer we get the more we want it (picture a cheater chasing a hare). When we move away from a goal, the further we get or the more distance between us and the goal, the less progress we make. (picture the hare running away from the cheater, it runs fastest when the cheater is hot on it’s tail, but will slow right down if the cheater stops running).
That’s not to say that away motivation is all bad, although you might only take notice of something when it is a threat or you are highly stressed, and you might only do enough work to be comfortable, not to eradicate the issue, it will get you moving initially.
That undesired outcome can be great for getting the ball rolling, you also need to back it up with a positive at the end. Visualise a positive, desired outcome. In the case of the hare, it can run from the cheater and aim for the woods, that way, no matter what the cheater does the hare keeps running to the woods where it knows it can rest and be safe. That way, as you move away from the undesired outcome and the motivation burns off, you are drawn into a powerful towards motivation that will drive you and inspire you as you get to where you want to be.
Top Motivational Tip: Make sure you are moving toward your goals for positive reasons. Check that your motivation is for an outcome you want instead of an undesired outcome you are moving away from (i.e I’ll save money because I don’t want to be broke) The best goals are ones that inspire you to keep going and follow through.
Coach Tip: If you really have to take action and you’re struggling to find a positive, your coach or mentor will be able to do a goal assessment with you to get it turned around mentally or a value shift to get you aligned with the outcome. As we use Away Motivation to get started, we then want to turn around and use Toward Motivation to sprint towards our goal.
Check Your Balance
If you are feeling overwhelmed about where to get started, already sacrificing sleep to get your goal met, or if getting your priorities in order is doing your head in, why not make 2017 a positive one by aiming for a healthy lifestyle? At Live it Now we talk about being the Motivated Idiot. A goal is set, motivation is high, and we go full-gas 24 hours a day until the inevitable burn-out hits.
Having a healthy lifestyle is balanced. It ensures you have good income and work-life balance. It means boosting your relationships and health as well as your success. If you put all your eggs in one basket, all your other baskets stay empty, and an empty basket is good for only one thing: storage. Don’t store your loved ones, your emotions or your health for the sake of making a million bucks in the first year of your business. Or if your goal is the perfect body, think about the cost of being fully ripped if you are up at 4am for cross training, straight to work, back to the gym, eat half a chicken and broccoli in a shake, and go straight to bed. Are your family and loved ones worth storing in pursuit of that goal?
Our energy is our life force for all of our goals. In business especially, there is a temptation to work 18 hours a day for months on end. I always suggest to my coaching clients to have a recharge every three months. Getting back to nature is the best way to recharge! A week or weekend away camping or even a day out bushwalking are perfect for recharging the batteries.
Top Lifestyle Tip: Map out your life and assess where you are right now in all areas, Business/career, Financial, Emotional, Health, Relationships and Spirituality.
Coach Tip: Your life coach or mentor will be key in assessing what impact your goals and plans will have on your life and suggest ways that you can support other areas of your life as you get those goals met.
If you need to develop a healthy lifestyle or gain new motivation tips for reaching your goals, I would love to give you a free ticket to Live it Now so you can recharge, then get back out there and cause some trouble!
